Baseball Concludes Fall Practice

The Georgia State baseball team concluded fall practice last week and will now start preparations for their February 20th season opener. Coming off a historic 2008 season in which the team re-wrote the Panther record book, the 2009 season is one can't get here fast enough for many associated with the program.

"I am really pleased with the maturity and leadership of the team," commented Head Coach Greg Frady. "We developed a culture of hard work, intensity and great practices everyday during the fall. A lot of the teaching points I emphasized also came up in the recent World Series and I think that has shown our players what we are striving for and can become."

Among the reasons for the positive outlook on the upcoming season was the teams' production in its annual fall game against the Ontario Blue Jays. The Panther bats combined for 29 runs, while the pitching staff allowed just three hits. For State, 14 players got at least one hit, while seniors Nick Hogan, Derek Simmons, Chase Childers, junior Bradley Logan and freshman Justin Malone each had three hits.

The pitching staff would put forth as an impressive effort as the hitters. Senior Robinson Polanco started the game and did not allow a hit. He was replaced by senior Adam Knight in the second inning who struck out two, while not allowing a hit.

"Adam Knight really stepped up his game on the mound in the off-season," stated Frady. "I think he advanced the furthest from last season, but with that said, Derek Simmons and Bradley Logan have played exceptionally hard this fall. Marc Mimeault also had a great fall and I look forward to seeing what he does behind the plate this spring."

First pitch of the spring is scheduled for Friday, February 20th at 5:00 p.m. against Cleveland State. In total, the Panthers will play 28 home games as they look to return to the CAA Tournament in Wilmington in May
