Baseball's Childers Combines Families

When it comes to professional sports, many athletes will say that their teammates are their second family. When it comes to college athletics, this is even more so, as when practice ends, student-athletes often go home to live with the same individuals they just finished practicing with.

Georgia State senior shortstop Chase Childers added to this meaning over the weekend when he had the pleasure of combining his true family with that of his baseball family. Childers got married on Saturday to his college sweetheart Nataley, and the baseball team, including Head Coach Greg Frady, was there to support him all the way.

"It truly meant a lot to me to have my teammates there," commented Childers. "A lot of us have been together for three-plus years and they really are my second family. I spend more time with them that I do my real family and I love them all to death."

Redshirt Junior David Ferrer, a pitcher for the Panthers was one of the groomsman in the wedding, though the baseball team was well represented at the event that took place at the Tate House in Jasper, Ga.

In what could have been a tough time of year for a wedding or any other extra activities, as the baseball team goes through fall practice, Coach Frady was kind enough to give the team Friday, Saturday and Sunday off to participate in the festivities.

"It was absolutely great to have Coach in attendance and for him to be kind enough to give the team off a few days," stated Childers. "He has always been very supportive and with rearranging practices for us, it truly meant a lot. He has always been a mentor for me."

As fall practice comes to an end on Saturday with the annual fall game, it will be time to start thinking about the upcoming season that lies a short four months away.

"I am very excited about the upcoming season," commented Childers. "As this will be my last year, I believe that we have the chance to do some really great things. We have some great chemistry with this team and I think the upcoming season is going to be a great one."
